He serves as Artistic Director of Centro Superior Música Creativa in Madrid\, where he has launched innovative degrees in Jazz\, Flamenco performance\, and Iberian Folk Music. As a performer specializing in double bass and traditional Spanish percussion\, Carrillo has recorded two albums and produced several shows featuring Spain’s National Ballet and flamenco dancers. He has played over 400 concerts with the Maureen Choi Quartet across Spain\, Europe\, Asia\, and the USA. His work explores traditional music from around the world\, with particular expertise in flamenco\, Iberian folk music\, and Latin-American traditions. \nMaureen Choi\nKorean-American violinist Maureen Choi is a rare artist bringing the violin into the heart of flamenco\, fusing its duende with classical elegance and jazz improvisation. Based in Spain\, she leads the acclaimed Maureen Choi Quartet\, forging a distinctive “Spanish Chamber Jazz” sound critics have called “revolutionary.” Prize-winning since age five\, Choi trained at Michigan State University and Berklee College of Music. After relocating to Spain\, she formed her current quartet and released Ida y Vuelta and the critically praised THEIA. With over 700 concerts across Spain\, the US\, Asia\, and Australia\, the quartet has appeared at major festivals including Madrid Jazz Festival\, SXSW\, and the Guggenheim Bilbao. Renowned for her emotional intensity and fearless cross-cultural voice\, Choi continues to redefine what the violin can be in flamenco.

Meira Goldberg on Spanish Dance to Flamenco 1894-2024\nNovember 20 @ 1:00 PM  |  NYPL for the Performing Arts (NYC)\nSpanish dancer Carmen Dauset “Carmencita” arrived in New York in 1889 and quickly became a sensation in New York society. She was painted by both William Merritt Chase and John Singer Sargeant\, and in 1894\, she became the first woman and the first dancer to be filmed by Thomas Edison. By the early decades of the 20th century great Spanish and flamenco dancers were performing in the U.S.\, and some\, such as the Cansinos and Aurora Arriaza\, settled in the U.S. as teachers and performers. For this Dance Historian Is In\, Carlota Santana and K. Meira Goldberg present images and video footage surveying the early years of Spanish dance through the present day. \n  \nFor more than 10 years\, The Dance Historian Is In at the Library for the Performing Arts has highlighted a diverse range of dancers and choreographers across history. This series began when archivist and historian David Vaughan started volunteering at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division. Vaughan began a monthly program showing his favorite dance films from the Division’s extensive collection\, through which he unearthed many treasures\, and helped acquire even more. Vaughan continued the series until the end of his life. What forms\, styles\, and aesthetics are included in this term? How do we study its history? What are our sources\, and how do we use them? \nFLAMENCO STYLE AND REPRESENTATION: Sunday\, March 10\nWho and what influenced flamenco culture? How did the most prominent flamenco styles emerge? Who performs\, where\, and why? \nWOMEN AND FLAMENCO: Sunday\, March 17\nWhere did the image of the female flamenco dancer\, which is often the most representative of the art form\, come from? How is it used\, and how did it affect the realities of women in flamenco over time? \nFLAMENCO HERITAGE: Sunday\, March 24\nWhat flamenco families have been integral in shaping the art form over generations? \n  \n*A recording will be available for 7 days after each live class. \n \n\nTICKETS\nSingle Class – $25 / All Classes – $80 \n\n\nABOUT THE EDUCATOR\nCLARA CHINOY\, Universidad de Sevilla \nClara Chinoy is an independent flamenco dancer and researcher who has lived between Madrid\, Seville and Jerez for over 30 years. She is honored to have shared the stage with Miguel Funi\, Concha Vargas and Pepe Torres\, and to dance in fiesta to the cante of Miguel Funi\, Fernanda de Utrera\, Pepa de Utrera\, Gaspar de Utrera\, and Inés Bacán. She holds a B.A. in Anthropology from Harvard University; an M.F.A. in Dance from Tisch School of the Arts\, New York University; a Masters in Scenic Arts from Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and a Diploma of Advanced Studies from the Multidisciplinary program of Flamenco studies at the Universidad de Sevilla. She has taught at Smith\, Mount Holyoke and Hunter Colleges\, Wesleyan University\, Universidad Carlos III\, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and Universidad de Sevilla. Her doctoral work in Gitano history\, integration and identity (Anthropology\, U. Sevilla) is based on a Fulbright Senior Research Grant (2000) in Andalucía. She has published in Flamenco on the Global Stage (MacFarland Books)\, Celebrating Flamenco’s Tangled Roots (Cambridge Scholars Publishing) and the Journal of Gypsy Studies\, and has recently completed the translation from Spanish to English of American Gitanos\, An Ethnography of the Calós in Mexico City by David Lagunas\, soon to be published by Palgrave MacMillan. In 1998 Clara received a grant from Meet the Composer to collaborate with her husband\, guitarist David Serva\, to create “Carmen’s Sisters” for Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana\, a dance/theater piece built on traditional flamenco verses which speak of women’s experience. In 1999 she created the first version of Navidad Flamenca\, loosely based on the Nutcracker\, in collaboration with guitarist David Serva and the other artists involved in the production. This production toured for two Christmas seasons\, and has become part of the Company repertory. She is also an experienced performer and teacher of classical South Indian dance.
