Q: Will there be a Flamenco Certamen Competition this year?
A: Due to circumstances surrounding Covid-19 and subsequent closures of theaters and restrictions on large events, there will not be a Certamen Competition this year. We plan for a return of all the events surrounding the Competition in 2021.
Q: If I complete the Artist Development Series am I guaranteed to compete in the Flamenco Certamen Competition in 2021?
A: The Artist Development Series will fully prepare you to apply for and successfully compete in the Flamenco Certamen USA Competition, however it is not a guarantee that you will be selected as a Finalist. Finalists are chosen each year via an application and video submission. Applications receive thorough review by a panel of flamenco professionals who determine the artists that will compete in the Final Competition.
Q: I would like to take advantage of the Full Series with the Residency Intensive at Kaatsbaan, but I am concerned that the residency will not take place due to Covid-19 related restrictions.
A: In the event that there are restrictions on travel, gatherings of a certain size, etc. at Kaatsbaan, the Intensive will take place at Flamenco Vivo Studios. If restrictions remain in effect for the Fall of 2020, the Intensive will be rescheduled for the Winter/Spring of 2021.
Q: What will I learn during the Residency Intensive at Kaatsbaan | Cultural Park for Dance?
A: The residency intensive will include daily classes, cuadro class with musicians, one-on-one mentorship sessions and free time in the studio to work, among other concentrations.
Q: Do I need to live in New York City to take advantage of the Full Series with the Residency Intensive?
A: You may be from anywhere to participate, however you would want to plan to travel to NYC in October to attend the Residency Intensive in person.
Q: What level of dancer do I need to be to participate in the Artist Development Series:
A: Dancers of all levels will benefit from participation, as the Artist Development Series is designed to supplement/compliment the education you are already receiving from teachers in your respective communities. It is imperative to regularly attend a technique and/or choreography class weekly as you engage with this program.
Q: I want to participate in the Artist Development Series, but am unable to pay the full fee. What are my options?
A: You may apply for a scholarship to support participant fees. Please complete the Artist Development Series Application and fill out the Request a Scholarship section. All applicants are eligible to apply and scholarships will be awarded on a sliding scale based on demonstrated financial need.
