Each year Certamen Finalists are chosen based on their ability to prepare and perform a solo accompanied by live music at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. Leading up to the competition, Finalists are provided with live musicians, free studio space and sessions with a mentor from the professional flamenco community.
There are two levels of participation: Estudio Level (flamenco students) and Tablao Level (flamenco pre-professionals). Estudio Level applicants are restricted to the Tri-State area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut) and the Tablao Level is open to applicants from around the world. Ten applicants (5 at each level) will be selected Flamenco Certamen USA Finalists. Selected Finalists will perform a choreography of their choice during a public evening event to be held at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at the NYPL for the Performing Arts on Friday, October 25, 2019. At that time, cash and other prizes will be awarded.
This year’s Certamen competition also includes a week-long residency at Kaatsbaan International Dance Center in Tivoli, NY, where each Finalist will have access to workshops, one-on-one mentorship and sessions with Musicians.
