FLAMENCO NEWS
August 8th will go down in the Company’s history as Flamenco Vivo’s cast of 11 dancers performed flamenco alongside the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. Founder and Artistic Director Carlota Santana speaks to the meaning this surreal moment held:
“I was in awe standing onstage with the Philharmonic behind us, under the famed Hollywood Bowl bandshell, looking out across the crowd. Decades of work led to this moment––a dream come true, and a once in a lifetime experience for all involved.”
Deemed a success by dance reviews, we hope that the show was just as memorable for those who attended. In Fjord Review’s “Dancing with Duende,” acclaimed arts journalist Victoria Looseleaf shares her experience:
“The dance troupe… was in fine unison mode, arms raised, fingers filigreed. A kind of dance-off, here were high kicks and backward dips breathing life into Falla’s familiar score… Ramrod straight and tossing off a jump here, a whipping turn there, the dancers were also adept in their use of castanets. The final jota, or courtship dance, was a study in raucousness, with the troupe proffering an astonishing array of beats…”
Thanks in part to your generosity, Flamenco Vivo was able to turn another dream into a reality––building a pipeline for the youth we serve in public schools to train pre-professionally! In this first rendition, ten passionate students, primarily of longtime arts ed partner school Repertory Company High School, danced their days away in a weeklong flamenco residency in our studios. Led by our incredible Teaching Artist Arielle Rosales, the week of foundational technique studies culminated in a celebratory showing for family and friends. Hear how it went from the students who participated:
“Thank you for this unforgettable experience. This intensive was so much fun! So supportive and incredible.” – Yomisell
“Thank you for this experience, I am honestly lost for words… you have helped me so much.” – Hades
We are thrilled to announce we have received NEFA’s National Dance Project grant! An unprecedented level of support for the Company, this will bolster our upcoming commission and touring of Patricia Guerrero’s new work QUINTO ELEMENTO. This work will explore the fifth element of the earth: ether, that which we do not see yet is ever-present. Hailed as a master of tradition who dares to deconstruct the art form (The New Yorker), Guerrero draws on her deep knowledge of flamenco but ventures beyond its aesthetic bounds, unraveling flamenco’s expressive movement language through fragmentation and chaos in her choreography. Described in her own words:
“A cosmic dance full of inertia and energy that flows through the rhythm and melody of the universe…” – Patricia Guerrero
