FUN FACT
GUESS THE PALO!
Check out this video of costume designer/dancer Belén de la Quintana performing at Tablao Villa Rosa. Can you guess the palo?
↓
ANSWER:
Tientos! Tientos are a slow palo (style of flamenco music) in a four-count rhythm. They were first developed by singer Enrique el Mellizo as an expressive variation of flamenco Tangos. Tientos lyrics often set a dark mood with themes of loss, unrequited love, imprisonment, and longing for freedom. Traditional tientos end with tangos, as demonstrated by singer Ismael el Bola in the video above. The dancer featured, Belén de la Quintana, is also a renowned costume designer who created the stunning looks for Flamenco Vivo’s newest production, Fronteras. Accompanying her with palmas is one of flamenco’s most exciting artists: José Maldonado, who choreographed FRONTERAS with Karen Lugo— playing June 21-25 at the Joyce Theater.
