Answer: Tangos!
With a medium tempo in 4/4 time, tangos are rooted in African and Caribbean rhythms and dance traditions. This video features 3 figuras (important flamenco figures), all hailing from important flamenco families of Roma heritage:
Pastora Galván hails from the famous Galván family. Her father, José Galván has helped to preserve traditional flamenco through his performances and school of dance in Sevilla, and her brother, Israel Galván, has helped revolutionize the dance form through his avant garde performances.
José Maya is a descendant of the great dancer Fernanda Romero. Born in a Gitano family of artists, painters, actors and writers, José Maya is also related to the famous painter Antonio Maya and the singer Gabriel Moreno.
The Montoya family has brought us many talented flamenco artists, including Lole Montoya (of the famous musical duo Lole y Manuel). Her sister, singer Angelita Montoya, is featured in this video. They are the daughters of dancer Juan Montoya and singer Antonia Rodríguez “La Negra.”
