Flamenco Vivo teaching artist Sol Koeraus “La Argentinita” premieres her new work El Inmigrante, a captivating performance featuring live accompaniment by guitarist Raphael Brunn. The show narrates the compelling story of an immigrant who embarks on a courageous journey from a distant homeland, carrying with her a tapestry of emotions, including fears, sorrows, and anxieties, but above all, an unyielding determination to carve out the life she envisions.
Dancer Leilani Chirino shares her experience of the award she received at last year’s Flamenco Certamen USA––a week of study at FlamencoDanza Estudio in Sevilla, Spain:
“Winning a beca to train specifically at FlamencoDanza was truly a gift I could have never imagined.
Having danced ballet since I was a kid, I felt that there couldn’t be two more different styles of dance. I stopped dancing ballet to focus on flamenco and found myself trying to forget my ballet training, instead retraining my mind and body to think about flamenco. At FlamencoDanza, there was no divide but an integrated way of training. Every morning was spent doing 1 hour of basic ballet before starting flamenco technique class.
After one week, I felt like a different person. I no longer felt pain from an ankle injury, my body felt stronger, and my mind and body felt more connected.Thinking back, it makes sense to use basic ballet to build strength and to develop good posture and movement.
FlamencoDanza was also a warm, caring, fun environment. Ursula and Tamara gave so much personalized attention and helpful corrections with so much care. It truly felt like a homecoming for me and I can’t wait to go back!”
Bárbara Martínez and Albert Alabedra (as ALBA Musik)!
A huge congratulations to Bárbara (Flamenco Vivo teaching artist) and Albert, whose album Dawn has been placed on the Grammy ballot for consideration. They’re currently up for the first round of Recording Academy voting in the category of Best Latin Pop Album! Hear firsthand from them how it feels:
“We found out about the Grammy consideration on October 11th, the day that the first-round voting started––we were really excited!
It’s been only 1 year since Albert and I started ALBA and we couldn’t be happier. We published 2 albums, 4 music videos, played lots of super fun gigs including playing for the World Economic Forum a couple weeks ago. All in our first year!
But what’s more important to us is to acknowledge the dream team of super talented musicians we had participating in the album, they played their hearts out. ALBA’s family is what really makes us super proud of. We really want to name all of them:
Bob DiGiacomo on fretless bass and producer, Joselin Vargas on percussions, palmas, electric guitar, keyboards, background vocals and he also produced and arranged our single Sin Fronteras, Gonzalo Grau on piano, Engin Günaydin on drums, Yacouba Sissoko on kora, Ernesto Llorens on violin, Arturo Soriano on sax and flutes, Maria Toro on flute, Baba Moussa on talking drums, Juan Pedro Jiménez on background vocals and Tim Ries from the Rolling Stones on sax.
Mastering the album we had the legend Robert Honablue who worked for Santana, Barbara Streisand, Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin and dozens more, such an honor.
We also want to name and thank our dream team of flamenco dancers and background vocalists that you all know in the NYC Flamenco scene who are part of ALBA’s family and have contributed so much to our live performances: Elisabet Torras, Olyda Ola, Laura Peralta, Adriana Olivares, Rebecca Thomas, Giselle Saad, Sol “La Argentinita,” and Natalia Starkova, ole all of you!
Albert and I have recently started composing the new songs that will form a new album that will be released in 2024! We are really grateful for everything, our fan base keeps growing and everything related to ALBA is filled with love.”
