How has New York City served as the gateway to flamenco in the United States? From the arrival of early Spanish and Flamenco dance in the 19th century to the present day resident and touring companies, you will find out how flamenco took root in New York City, and came of age right on American soil. With the 100 years of Flamenco in New York City exhibit serving as the foundation, exhibit curators and flamenco experts Ninotchka Bennahum and Meira Goldberg will take you through the pivotal moments in the evolution of the art form within the United States.
The “100 Years of Flamenco in NYC“ exhibit was imagined in 2009 by Flamenco Vivo Artistic Director, Carlota Santana, and was on display at the Vincent Astor Gallery in the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts from March 13 – August 3, 2013. Accompanied by a 180 page catalogue by curators Ninotchka Bennahum and K. Meira Goldberg, this exhibit presented an intimate portrait of the lives of Spanish and American dancers, flamenco dance itself, and the lasting impact of the flamenco art form on New York City culture.

The world premiere of FRONTERAS, a new work choreographed by two of flamenco’s most exciting artists: José Maldonado and Karen Lugo – with an original score by Jose Luis de la Paz that will be performed live. FRONTERAS asks: “What is stronger – what unites us or what separates us?” Despite the barriers we encounter from the moment we enter this world; it is our natural drive to push beyond these obstacles and seek deeper relationships – and like life itself, flamenco does not understand nor accept such boundaries but supersedes them. Flamenco Vivo’s star-studded international cast will include Maldonado, whom The New York Times praised for “bursts of brilliance and uncommon invention,” alongside Lugo in her NYC debut.
