Medallas de Oro for Flamenco

This year’s ceremony for the Medallas de Oro (Gold Medals of Merit in the Fine Arts) held the largest concentration of flamenco recipients in history. The Medallas are the highest cultural distinction granted by the government of Spain; past recipients include such figures as Salvador Dalí and Camarón de la Isla. This year’s ceremony honored Pepe Habichuela (guitarist), Manuela Carrasco (dancer), Serranito (guitarist), Maria Vargas (singer), El Pele (singer), El Taranto (peña), and La Platería (peña.)
