The Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, flamenco’s most prominent international festival, just closed its latest edition, comprising 72 performances, with a tribute to women in cante. Singer Carmen Linares held this final show celebrating the 30th anniversary of her historic 1996 album Antología de la mujer en el cante. The album, regarded as seminal in flamenco, brought renewed attention to the female figures whose voices shaped flamenco cante such as La Niña de los Peines, La Serneta, La Repompa, and La Trini. For the Bienal’s close, Linares revived the now-classic repertoire alongside flamenco cantaoras of multiple generations including Marina Heredia, María Terremoto, Rocío Luna, and bailaora Rafaela Carrasco. This performance placed women’s lineage in flamenco at the forefront of one of the field’s most renowned stages.
