BIENAL DE FLAMENCO 2022
Yinka Esi Graves: A Conversation from a Dissenting Body
by Rosalia Gomez for Diario de Sevilla
Flamenco dancer Yinka Esi Graves held a talk at the recent Bienal de Flamenco in Sevilla, exploring both connection and contradiction within the art form.
Cited as an example was her experience of dancing the guajira: “something very satisfying for my dancer’s body, but whose lyrics––almost always about mulatto women seen as sexual objects––make me doubt how to position myself before it.”
