Get excited for Flamenco Vivo’s upcoming Joyce Theater production EQUILIBRIO (Clásica/Tradición), choreographed by Emilio Ochando and accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Gonzalo Grau. Grau, lauded as a versatile musician “who alternates like a magician” between instruments, will blend piano, cello, and percussion with Ochando’s creative use of shawls, castanets, bells, and spoons. Grau, of Caracas, Venezuela, is hardly limited to flamenco––the multitalented musician is also known for his mastery in a breadth of genres, showcased in his work as a composer for major operas and symphonies as well as his Grammy-nominated salsa fusion band La Clave Secreta. Looking to level up your artistry? Applications are officially open for the 2024 Flamenco Certamen USA, the only event of its kind in the US! The certamen provides a spotlight for emerging talent and fosters the continued development and expansion of the flamenco art form. Participants showcase their work in performance and compete to win scholarships to study in Spain, among other prizes. The Flamenco Certamen supports rising flamenco artists in their ongoing evolution by providing one-on-one mentorship from international flamenco professionals, workshops, and exposure to a network of global flamenco artists.
