FROM SPAIN: CULTURE
A BRIEF HISTORY
International Roma Day (Día del Pueblo Gitano)
Each year, this day is dedicated to celebrating Roma culture and raising awareness of the issues facing the community. To honor the “chapter missing from our history books” on Roma people in Spain, known as Gitanos, Romani Lesson was created.
Flamenco would not exist today were it not for the rich cultural contributions of Gitanos––click gallery above to see the lesson on Gitano figures in flamenco.
FROM PEÑA FLAMENCA NYC
Guess who sang these famous lyrics?
Soy Gitano y vengo a tu casamiento,
A partirme la camisa,
La camisita que tengo
In our recent edition of AFICIÓN with Antonio el Farru, he explained that in Gitano culture, partirme la camisa, or ripping open one’s shirt, is an expression of great emotion—even greater than an OLE! This tradition has been immortalized in the famous song “Soy Gitano” by Camarón de la Isla. Click below to hear this song and more from Farru’s favorite musicians!
