Pioneras Flamencas: Las primeras mujeres del flamenco según los relatos y recuerdos de la época, or “Flamenco Pioneers: The First Women of Flamenco According to the Stories and Memories of the Time” is a new book that brings together the work of Guillermo Núñez del Prado (first published in 1904) and Fernando el de Triana (first published in 1935). These are the two main repertoires of memories and testimonials, both written and photographic, that exist on the first women of flamenco. In many cases, the only information we have about these female flamenco artists comes from these two sources. This exciting new book is available for purchase at the online store, Libros Corrientes, where you can find many more books on flamenco as well.
Almond nougat, or turrón de almendra, is the most famous holiday treat in Spain. Its origins date back to the time when Muslims ruled the Iberian Peninsula, more than five centuries ago. From October through January, supermarkets throughout Spain are filled with many varieties of turrón. Most fall into two categories: the hard nougat (from Alicante) and the soft nougat (from Jijona). On average, Spaniards eat an average of one kilo of nougat per person per year, and 90% is consumed around the holidays!
Other holiday treats that are popular in Spain include: mazapán (marzipan), mantecados (powderlike shortbread), polvorón (a type of mantecado that has almonds), peladillas (candied almonds), roscos de vino (ring shaped cookies made with a touch of wine), pestiños (honey-glazed fritters), and roscón de reyes (a sweetbread that celebrates Three King’s Day in Spain and throughout Latin America).
