Mayte Martín wins the Medalla de Oro al Mérito, awarded by the Ministry of Culture of Spain to individuals excelling in artistic creation, who have provided valuable services to promotion of art and culture and conservation of artistic heritage. This is an important step for the LGBTQ community, as according to Mayte Martín “The best defense against homophobia is visibility.”
