#SOSTABLAOS
Consejo Nacional del Flamenco
Bellas Artes, 2021
Since the pandemic hit Flamenco Vivo has kept you up to date on the #SOSTablaos movement that helped shine a light on the flamenco community’s need for support. Recently Spain presented its first national flamenco council, Consejo Nacional del Flamenco, created to defend the cultural and economic sector of the artform.
While associations according to sector already exist (i.e. those for tablaos), this will be the first in history to unite all flamenco sectors under one roof––bringing together artists, flamenco clubs, tablaos, festivals, artistic representatives and producers, universities, academies, record companies, flamenco museums, fashion, instruments, associations, companies, entrepreneurs, communicators, writers, and specialized media. Creating such a union will allow for greater recognition and strengthen the fight for dignity and benefits for those who work in flamenco across all sectors.

TANGOS!
This particular letra (see below) is part of the song “Jirones de Tela,” written by flamenco singer David Lagos for Grammy Award winner La Argentina’s self-titled debut album. The lyrics reflect the Arabic influences on flamenco and are sung in this video by Flamenco Vivo’s very own Bárbara Martínez, who will be performing with us as part of La Peña Flamenca NYC on January 21st.
JIRONES DE TELA
Traigo las telas morunas bordadas de mil colores
las traigo yo, valgame Dios
que las telitas de la morería las vendía yo
las vendía yo, las vendía yo
capricho, primo mio, de los señores
capricho del corazón
I bring Moorish fabrics embroidered with a thousand colors
I bring them, bless my soul
The fabrics from the Moorish quarter were sold by me
I sold them, I sold them
Whim, my cousin, of the people
Whim of the heart
