Last week the Parliament of Andalucía passed its first flamenco law to guarantee its protection, conservation, and the promotion of its knowledge for its use as a social good and as an intangible cultural heritage of Andalucía. The Chancellor of Culture & Tourism, Arturo Bernal, has assured that Andalucía “will continue to be the cradle of flamenco” thanks to this rule.
Although some have criticized the new law for lacking an economic commitment, others are celebrating this momentous occasion as a historical first step. Plans already include engaging artists and professionals to integrate flamenco into the curricular design of schools, either during school hours or in extracurricular activities. Juan Manuel Moreno, the President of the regional government of Andalucía, raved on his Twitter account saying: “It was a collective wish and we have made it come true: Andalucía approves its first Flamenco Law for its protection and transmission to future generations.” The law is also being celebrated by artists and representatives of the sector, who were in the Plenary Hall, such as bailaores Farruquito, Cristina Hoyos, and Manuela Carrasco, singers El Pele and Pepe de Lucía, guitarist Tomatito, and pianist Dorantes. Of course, the best way to mark this important moment in flamenco history was with singing, dancing, and many an ¡Ole! at the Parliament’s gates.
This year’s edition of the largest flamenco festival outside of Spain features flamenco powerhouses Israel Galván, Marco Flores, Claudia Cruz, Marina Valiente, Nazaret Reyes, Iván Vargas, Raquel Heredia, Olga Pericet, Patricia Guerrero, and more. The festival includes 23 performances, 60+ workshops, 12 international companies, and 114 total performers!
Answer: La Portada!
La Portada is the huge gate that marks the main entrance to the Feria fairgrounds in Sevilla. Redesigned and rebuilt each year, this year’s portada is designed by Gregorio Esteban Pérez and pays tribute to Plaza de España and the Teatro Coliseo, as this year’s contest parameters for La Portada were to draw on Sevilla’s regionalist civil architecture.
