Flamenco Vivo has been commissioned to perform in collaboration with the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl this summer, a landmark performance for the Company! This will be our very first time performing with a full philharmonic––and at one of the US’s most iconic venues no less. A cast of 11 dancers will perform alongside the classical compositions Boléro and The Three Cornered Hat in an evening dedicated to Latin American and Spanish dance-inspired symphonic music. Emilio Ochando, lead Company member and choreographer for our upcoming Joyce Theater production, will create the choreography for the Philharmonic’s rendition of the Spain-inspired musical masterpiece.
Inspired by the desire to strengthen and build relationships within the dance community, Flamenco Vivo Studios is excited to present a new micro-residency which offers 10 hours of studio space in exchange for teaching a 1.5 hour masterclass for the NYC dance community. While our studios are best suited for percussive dance forms and those working in hard soled shoes, this residency is open to all choreographers, dancers, and performers who seek to research, explore, and expand their practice.

In 2010, flamenco had a historic day on November 16 when it was designated a Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, joining a now 700-long list of traditions around the world ranging from bachata to kimchi. But what exactly does this designation mean? Officially defined as “a phenomenon that is transmitted from generation to generation and constitutes an important aspect of a community’s identity,” this term was initially coined in UNESCO’s efforts to correct its historic bias toward Europe and North America. Check out this insightful article on the history and curiosity of this title, its political implications, and what it means for cultural legacies across the globe!
Answer: Answer: Team Great Britain’s gold medal-winning 1984 routine!
Performed by duo Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, this performance wowed the stadium and everyone watching at home with their lyrical choreography and heartfelt performance to the sound of Boléro. The routine has gone down as one of the sport’s best performances of all time, and is lauded for its artistic-over-technical approach.
We can’t wait to debut our flamenco interpretation of Boléro this August!
