Q: What Covid-19 restrictions are in place for the Lake Placid Residency and the Final Performance at the Bruno Walter Auditorium?
A: Covid-19 restrictions are ever evolving. Lake Placid Arts Center, The Bruno Walter Auditorium and Flamenco Vivo will adhere to any/all guidelines provided by New York State, the CDC and WHO. Requirements may include a required quarantine period before participation, mask wearing, and Covid-19 testing.
Q: Will there still be a Residency and Final Performance if Covid-19 restrictions limit or prohibit live performances?
A: In the event of restrictions on audience size and/or cancellation of live performances, Flamenco Vivo is prepared to continue with a Virtual Certamen Program. More details on this option will be provided as the Covid-19 pandemic evolves. All Finalists will be required to adhere to all guidelines for working within a Covid-19 bubble to ensure the safety of all.
Q: What do I need in order to apply to the 2021 Flamenco Certamen USA?
A: In order to apply for the Flamenco Certamen you will need a 1-page resume, a current high-resolution dance photograph or headshot, a 150 word bio, video submission and a brief artist biography.
Q: What are the Video requirements for my application?
A: The video submission must include a full baile, with no edits, taken within the last year to ensure that the Pre-Selection Jury may view your current level. The video must be of the palo you wish to perform for the Final Show and Judging on October 15, 2021. Please provide a video link of good sound and viewing quality (Youtube or Vimeo links only). No promotional reels will be accepted. For more specific video requirements, please refer to the Video Clip section of the Certamen Application.
Q: What palos can I submit for selection as a Finalist for the Estudio Level of competition?
A: Estudio Level applicants may apply with a level-appropriate palo. Our suggestions are: Alegrías, Fandangos, Guajíras, Tangos, Tientos. If you have a baile in a different palo and wish to apply, please contact Leslie Roybal at colmena@flamenco-vivo.org to discuss.
Q: What palos can I submit for selection as a Finalist for the Tablao Level of competition?
A: The Tablao Level applicants may apply with any palo they wish, keeping in mind that the baile should reflect an advanced level of knowledge, style and artistry.
Q: Can I submit a baile with a “complemento?”
A: Yes, dancers who wish to participate at the Tablao Level of competition may submit a baile with a complemento including but not limited to: abanico, bata, castañuelas, mantón, etc. If you are considering using a complemento for your baile, we highly suggest you choose one to focus on that highlights your mastery of that prop throughout your baile.
Q: If I get selected as a Finalist, how long will I have to decide if I wish to participate?
A: Notice of Finalist selection will be made the week of July 19, 2021. Confirmation of participation must be received by Monday, August 2, 2021.
Q: Are there any fees associated with my participation?
A: Yes, a non-refundable participation fee of $200 is required to secure your place in the Lake Placid Residency and Certamen competition. This fee is due upon confirmation of participation, on or before Monday, August 2, 2021. Subsidies and payment plans are available to help cover the cost of participation.
Q: Can I participate in the Flamenco Certamen if I am not available the week of the Lake Placid Residency October 9 – 14th?
A: No, participation in the residency intensive is required to participate in the Flamenco Certamen.
Q: What can I expect from the Lake Placid Residency?
A: The Lake Placid Residency will include a full week of master classes, mentor sessions and rehearsals with musicians. This week will thoroughly prepare the Finalist for the Final Show and Judging taking place on Friday, October 15, 2021 at the Bruno Walter Auditorium. More detailed information will be included in the Finalist Packet issued upon selection.
Q: What expenses can I expect to incur during the week of the Flamenco Certamen?
A: The Participant (Finalist) pays the following:
- Travel expenses to/from NYC
- Travel expenses from NYC to Lake Placid, NY (Train or Charter Bus)
- Accommodation for 2 nights in NYC (Thursday, October 14th & Friday, October 15th) for non-residents
- Food expenses
Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana will provide:
- Free housing for the week of the Lake Placid Residency October 9th – 14th
- All workshops, mentor sessions, etc. during this residency are included.
Q: Who are the Mentors and Musicians?
A: The Mentors and Musicians are carefully chosen from the professional flamenco community. These artists teach, perform and produce work within the flamenco art form nationally and internationally.
Q: Do I need to be a U.S. citizen to apply?
A: No, you do not need to be a U.S. Citizen to apply for the Flamenco Certamen. However, if you are selected as a finalist, you will be responsible for obtaining the proper travel documents in order to enter the United States.

Q: What are the costume requirements?
A: Specific costuming for the Final Show and Judging is at the discretion of each Finalist. Costumes should reflect the palo the dancer will be performing. Judges will look at the costuming as an integral element to the overall performance; care should be taken for costuming to have an appropriate fit and reflect a complete aesthetic. Rehearsal clothing is not recommended for this performance.
