Highlights include our annual season at Motorco Music Hall in Durham, NC as well as university stops from Los Angeles, CA to Amherst, MA. We can’t wait to bring flamenco to you!
P.S. New Yorkers: You can catch TABLAO here in the city at LPR Mar 26–27!
Dancer Iván Vargas––of the Maya flamenco dynasty––was interviewed recently by Dance Magazine about his creative process and shared his thoughts on a range of topics, from the use of facial expressions in flamenco dancing to the importance of improvisation. Central to his artistic approach is a deep appreciation for his roots, stating that flamenco “is a way of life for me. I always remember my homeland… in everything I create.” Similarly, Vargas emphasizes creating his work in the context of his community: “It is important never to see yourself as an island and to seek input and inspiration from those around you.”
A former NYC public school student shares his story of how access to the arts was crucial during his childhood, and takes to task the severe impact that further budget cuts to the arts would have on students throughout NYC if approved by the City Council––a move that would lead “to a generation of disenfranchised children from the wonders of creativity, expression, and imagination.”
Hear directly from Young Jr., who has experienced the impact of arts education firsthand and underscores its dire importance in the lives of children: “As New York City Council Members and the Administration debate the City budget, they must invest more money into school arts programs and cultural institutions… The arts saved my life–we must let it save others too.”
Answer: Paco de Lucía!
You read that right––the earliest recordings known to exist of Paco de Lucía and his brother Pepe de Lucía performing were recovered from a tape recorder and recently announced for public release as an album. The legendary musicians, at the time of the recording, were just 11 and 13! The full album will premiere in May but the first two recordings were just released, rather quietly. If you just found out, take a moment and listen to this precious piece of the art form’s history, one which we never had access to until now.
