Longtime Flamenco Vivo company dancer Fanny Ara’s newest production, Lilith, debuts this month in San Francisco and was just featured as a recommended performance in Dance Magazine. Flamenco Vivo was proud to support this project through funding Ara’s collaboration with Emilio Ochando. Lilith, based on its mythological namesake, is a work that depicts Ara’s own “mesmerizing journey of her fight towards growth, acceptance, and liberation” through the expression of experimental and improvisational flamenco dance.
In honor of the tenth anniversary of Paco de Lucía’s passing, this upcoming festival will mark a historic celebration of the monumental guitarist’s legacy through a wide variety of programming across NYC. The festival opens with grand gala at Carnegie Hall featuring over 30 artists including legends Farruquito and Carmen Linares. It hardly stops there––you can catch the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra’s rendition of his music at Symphony Space, a biographical book talk at Instituto Cervantes, and even an improvised jam session at Mercado Little Spain.
Answer: Sergio Ramos!
That’s right, world-famous soccer player Sergio Ramos (most known by way of his time at Real Madrid and Spain’s national team at the 2010 World Cup) recorded and released a full flamenco song along with a music video to accompany it! Born in Sevilla, Sergios has a longtime appreciation for the art form, which is readily apparent in the lyrics of the song: “Today I come to sing to you/that flamenco’s culture is global/those that deny this/are the first in line to dance.” Ramos is no stranger to the music industry, nor is his love for the art form a secret––he was a presenter at this year’s historic Latin Grammy Awards and he has already been featured in songs by multiple notable flamenco musicians including Niña Pastori‘s official hymn for the Selección Española in 2016.
