Semana Santa and the Saeta

In Spain, streets are filled every year with hundreds of people celebrating Semana Santa (holy week leading up to Easter). Processions smell of incense and feature large floats with beautifully ornate religious sculptures. During these processions, you might be fortunate enough to experience the magical power of the saeta. A song form over 500 years old, the saeta has been absorbed into the flamenco tradition and is often sung a capella from a balcony.
