FLAMENCO NEWS
Get excited for Flamenco Vivo’s upcoming Joyce Theater production EQUILIBRIO (Clásica/Tradición), choreographed by none other than beloved company dancer Emilio Ochando. Ochando first came to Flamenco Vivo by way of winning the Flamenco Vivo prize in Madrid’s Certamen to travel to NYC to dance with the company. When he isn’t dancing with us, Ochando is immersed in creating and touring solo projects, working as a guest artist for Spanish and international companies, and teaching workshops and masterclasses abroad. He has created several lauded original works––among his honors are nominations for the prestigious Premios Max, including Best New Artist and Best Male Interpreter in 2017 for his show SIROCO as well as Best New Show in 2020 for his work CLÁSICA TRADICIÓN, from which our upcoming show draws!
Flamenco Vivo is proud to share the exciting inaugural work of former Flamenco Certamen USA winner Aliesha Bryan’s group Blackbird Dance Company! Aliesha is joined by fellow Certamen winner Yasmina Yuexi, Flamenco Vivo teaching artist Olyda Ola, and Ballet Hispánico alum Georgia Dahill-Fuchel. The company’s debut performance The Message is a meditation in movement on the human experience of living under the specter of climate change. Through poetry, improvised and choreographed traditional flamenco and contemporary movement, and the organic relationship between song and dance, the work conveys stages of insouciance, recognition, paralysis, and the weight of consequence.
Check out this article covering a range of Spanish artists approaching flamenco innovatively via music. While you may have heard of María José Llergo or C. Tangana, chances are you’ll discover someone new––learn about the diverse musical influences of La Plazuela, Queralt Lahoz, Mëstiza, C. Tangana, and Maka, who all share the incorporation of flamenco in their work. It’s worth a read, and the inevitable listen!
