Flamenco Vivo is thrilled to share that we are a finalist for the 2024 National Dance Project award! We have commissioned the internationally acclaimed Patricia Guerrero to create QUINTO ELEMENTO (Fifth Element), a new full-length work exploring the fifth element of the earth: ether, that which we do not see yet is ever-present. Hailed as a “master of tradition who dares to deconstruct the art form,” Guerrero draws on her deep knowledge of flamenco but ventures beyond its aesthetic bounds. In this work, she embraces chaos and fragmentation to deconstruct flamenco’s expressive movement language
Flamenco Vivo is excited to offer two enhanced experiences of our upcoming Joyce Theater production EQUILIBRIO (Clásica/Tradición)! On Wed, June 19 stick around after the performance for a Curtain Chat with the cast, moderated by performer and educator Anna de la Paz (free to same day ticket holders.) On Sat, June 22, join us for our Family Matinee event for a chance to learn a short flamenco sequence––try your hand at palmas and your feet at zapateados with the help of a dancer and guitarist (free with RSVP to all ticket holders.) We can’t wait to see you!
Check out this article interviewing Flamenco Queer, the flamenco guitarist-dancer duo in Spain whose artistic ethos is to “go beyond the statements that flamenco imposes based on tradition” to “find [their] place in the world.” Learn about their experience working in tablaos, recent projects they’ve released together (including an EP that unites flamenco with drag), and their greatest queer inspirations.
“We like to emphasize that art has no gender…”
Answer: It’s complicated! But the two words could be more connected than we think.
Believe it or not, the pink bird isn’t just a common mispronunciation of “flamenco”––it might be derived from the same word. Or perhaps it’s simply a coincidence. But it’s fun to think about, and this article covers every theory on the etymology of the words. Check it out!
